That's how long I've been on Fiverr from Ussa, a small town in Taraba State, Nigeria. Nine weeks with an active gig, a completed profile, and a cover image I've updated twice. And as of writing this post zero orders.

The sellers who break through are, almost without exception, the ones who actively promote their gigs outside of Fiverr during those first weeks. LinkedIn posts that show expertise. Reddit engagement in relevant communities. Direct outreach to former clients. Anything that brings pre-warmed traffic to your gig rather than waiting for the algorithm to discover you.
If you're only waiting for Fiverr to send you buyers you're competing against thousands of other sellers for algorithmic attention. The Nigerian beginners who get their first order fastest are the ones promoting hardest outside the platform.
Problem 2: Gig not optimized properly
The first thing a buyer sees is your gig image. The client gets an idea about you from this. If your gig image is unprofessional, you are not going to make any clicks, which means no sales. Your gig description:
Don't open with "I am a writer with 3 years experience." Open with the buyer's problem. What do they need? What result will you deliver? Use short paragraphs, bullet points for deliverables, and end with a clear call to action "Message me before ordering and I'll respond within the hour."
Your gig image:
Profiles with photos get 30% more clicks. The same principle applies to gig images. High contrast background, bold readable text, under 5 words. Your thumbnail is what buyers see when scrolling make it impossible to ignore. The recommended size is 1280x769 pixels. I've updated mine twice, and after the second update, my impressions changed.

Research the exact phrases buyers search in your category. Use all 5 available tag slots. Don't leave them blank each unused tag is a missed ranking signal.
Your packages (Basic, Standard, Premium):
Start with a lower price ($5–$15) to get your first 5 reviews. You can raise prices later. My packages: Basic $5, Standard $15, Premium $30. Once I have 5 reviews, all three go up.
Your FAQ section:
Fill in at least 5 questions and answers. These appear on your gig page and answer buyer objections before they ask them. An empty FAQ section looks like an incomplete profile.
Your profile:

7 strategies to get your first Fiverr order
These are ranked from what I believe has the highest immediate impact to what takes longer to see results.
Strategy 1: Respond to every Fiverr Brief immediately
Fiverr Briefs are buyer requests that Fiverr sends directly to sellers whose gigs match what the buyer needs. When a Brief arrives in your notifications respond within 10 minutes.
Here's why this is your fastest path to a first order: most Nigerian Fiverr sellers ignore their Briefs, respond hours later, or don't respond at all. Being the first or one of the first to respond gives you a serious advantage buyers typically hire from the first few responses they find compelling.
Why are you not getting Briefs? Most common reasons:
Your gig tags don't match what buyers are searching → update your tags with more specific keywords.
Your gig is in a category with low buyer activity → research which categories get the most Briefs by searching Fiverr for active buyer demand.
Your response rate is low → Fiverr sends fewer Briefs to sellers with slow response histories.

Strategy 2: Promote your gig outside Fiverr — specifically where buyers are
This is the strategy that closes the gap fastest between zero orders and first order. Don't wait for Fiverr's algorithm. Bring your own traffic.
Where to promote specifically:
WhatsApp: Share your Fiverr gig link on your WhatsApp status. Send a direct message to business owners, entrepreneurs, and brands in your contact list. Don't spam send to people who might actually need your service.
Facebook: Share your gig link on your personal timeline and in relevant Nigerian business/freelance groups (you've already joined several). Post the link with context explain what your service does, who needs it, and what result they'll get.
