Is Raenest legit? That's the exact question I typed into Google before I downloaded the app two weeks ago.
I'd just been rejected by Payoneer over a NIN-SIM verification issue, and I needed a working USD account fast. Every blog post I found said "yes, it's legit" but none of them had actually used it for more than a few days, and none mentioned the negative reviews I found buried on Trustpilot.
So here's my honest answer, after two weeks of real use, combined with research into Raenest's background, fees, and what other users both happy and unhappy say about it.
What is Raenest, and why does it matter for Nigerian freelancers?
Raenest is a Nigerian fintech company, headquartered in Lagos, that gives African freelancers and remote workers virtual USD, GBP, and EUR accounts. You may also recognize the name Geegpay,Raenest was previously known as Geegpay before rebranding.
A few things worth knowing about the company behind the app:
Raenest was founded in 2021 and has raised $11.6 million from investors including QED Investors, Norrsken22, and accelerators backed by Visa and Google. As of early 2026, it has processed over $1 billion in payments for more than 700,000 users.
In February 2026, Raenest partnered with TerraPay to scale payouts for freelancers expanding beyond Africa into markets like India and the Philippines.
This matters because "is it legit" isn't just about whether an app works it's about whether a real, funded, regulated company stands behind it. Based on this research, Raenest isn't a random app from nowhere. It's a backed fintech company with real institutional partners.
That said, funding and partnerships don't guarantee a smooth experience for every individual user which is where my personal experience and other users' experiences come in.
My honest sign up and verification experience
I downloaded Raenest after Payoneer rejected my verification (I covered that story in my Fiverr payment guide). Here's exactly what happened:
Verification time: Less than 24 hours. I submitted my ID, and within a day my account was fully verified and usable.
No rejections, no back-and-forth. Compared to my Payoneer experience (which rejected me outright over NIN-SIM linkage), Raenest's process was smooth from the start.
I've now been using it for just over two weeks.
What's actually inside the Raenest app
Once verified, here's what you get access to:
Multiple currency accounts: I have a USD account, an NGN account, and a EUR account all within the same app. Each comes with its own account details for receiving money in that currency.
NGN withdrawal: Your USD/GBP/EUR balances can be converted and withdrawn to your Nigerian bank account.
For a Nigerian freelancer who might work with US clients (USD), UK clients (GBP), or European clients (EUR), having all three currency accounts in one app plus a usable virtual card is genuinely useful infrastructure.
I tested it with real money here's what happened
I didn't want to write "is it legit?" based on theory alone. So I sent $10 into my Raenest USD account as a test.
It arrived quickly, showed up correctly in my balance, and I could see exactly what it would convert to in naira. Fast and reliable exactly what you want from a financial app handling your freelance income.
$10 isn't a large test, and I haven't yet processed a full Fiverr withdrawal through it (still working on getting that first client). But for testing whether money moves in and out correctly, this gave me real confidence.
Raenest fees in 2026 what you'll actually pay
Based on Raenest's current pricing structure:
You get 4 free deposits per month across USD, GBP, and EUR accounts. After that, a flat $1 fee applies per additional deposit.
When converting USD to NGN, the conversion fee ranges from $0.25 to $2.70 and importantly, it never exceeds $2.70 regardless of how much you're converting. Whether you convert $500 or $50,000, your maximum conversion cost is capped at $2.70.
Sending NGN to another Nigerian bank account is completely free.
For comparison: As of early April 2026, receiving $1,000 on Raenest converts to approximately ₦1,387,244, compared to approximately ₦1,382,827 on Cleva for the same amount making Raenest's exchange rate slightly more favorable for larger amounts.
Raenest vs Cleva vs Payoneer honest comparison
Since I get asked this constantly, here's the honest breakdown:
Raenest vs Cleva: If you bill clients above $300 per invoice, Raenest's flat $1 deposit fee (after your 4 free ones) beats Cleva's $3 flat deposit fee. If you work on Upwork specifically, Raenest's "FastTrack" feature gets funds to you in about 1 hour instead of up to 5 days. However, for very small, frequent transactions, Cleva's zero-conversion-fee model can work out cheaper Cleva markets itself as having zero fees on Upwork deposits, zero conversion fees, and zero NGN withdrawal fees throughout 2026.
Raenest vs Payoneer: Payoneer remains the most widely supported option across freelance platforms (Fiverr's preferred method), but it requires NIN-SIM verification that blocks some Nigerians including me. Raenest's verification process avoided that specific issue entirely.
My honest take: There isn't one "best" answer. If Payoneer rejects you like it did me, Raenest is a strong, legitimate alternative. If you're processing very high volumes and want zero deposit fees specifically, Cleva is worth comparing too. I covered the Cleva comparison in more detail in a separate post.
The honest concerns what other users report
This is the part most "review" posts skip, and I think it's the most important part of being honest.
While researching, I found Trustpilot reviews from users reporting slow customer support response times including one case where a user's account was suspended for using multiple phone numbers during signup, and they reported difficulty getting a response from support afterward. Another review described a delayed refund situation that took time to resolve, though it was eventually refunded.
What this means for you:
✅ Use ONE phone number during signup — don't switch numbers or try multiple registration attempts with different numbers. This appears to be a common trigger for account flags.
✅ Keep documentation of your transactions — screenshots, transaction IDs — in case you ever need to follow up with support.
⚠️ Customer support response times can be slow for some users, based on these reports. My personal experience over 2 weeks has been smooth, but I haven't needed to contact support yet, so I can't personally verify response times.
I'm sharing this not to scare you away, but because an honest review includes the parts that aren't perfect. A company can be legitimate AND have inconsistent customer support both things can be true at once.
So is Raenest legit? My verdict
Yes, based on my two weeks of use and the research into the company.
Legitimacy signals:
✅ Real Lagos-based company, founded 2021
✅ $11.6M raised from recognized investors (QED, Norrsken22, Visa/Google accelerators)
✅ Over 700,000 users, $1B+ processed
✅ TerraPay partnership for international expansion (Feb 2026)
✅ My $10 test transaction worked smoothly
✅ Verification completed in under 24 hours with NIN plastic card
Honest caveats:
⚠️ Some users report slow customer support
⚠️ Account flags can occur if you use multiple phone numbers during signup
⚠️ I haven't yet processed a real freelance withdrawal (still working toward my first Fiverr client)
I've made up my mind to continue using Raenest as my primary USD account. For Nigerian freelancers especially those who, like me, hit walls with Payoneer or can't easily access PayPal Raenest is fast, reliable for everyday transactions, and supports the multiple currencies most international clients pay in.
Who should use Raenest
✅ Good fit if:
- Payoneer rejected your verification
- You need a working virtual USD card for online subscriptions
- You work with clients paying in USD, GBP, or EUR
- You make 4 or fewer deposits per month (free tier covers you)
⚠️ Consider alternatives if:
- You make very high-volume small transactions (compare Cleva's fee structure)
- You need Fiverr's directly-supported payment method (Payoneer remains Fiverr's primary recommendation)
- You've previously had issues with multiple-account flags on Nigerian fintech apps
